by Robert Perry

About The Book

The life of Woodrow "Woody" Crumbo (1912–1989) parallels the twentieth-century evolution of American Indian art, Crumbo is perhaps best known today for his oil paintings and silkscreen—revolutionary artwork that were denigrated by some critics, which helped move Indian art to museums of, and markers for, fine art. Now the life story of an artist who often went against the grain is told by an accomplished Indian storyteller.

About The Author

Robert Perry, born to Chickasaw's parents left Ada, Oklahoma to pursue a chemical engineering career, one that earned eight U. S. patents. At age thirty, he was chosen for the tribal council which began decades of learning about the 39 tribes of Oklahoma. After early retirement, he enjoyed telling the stories in print and to audiences. He and his wife Faye moved to Ada, which had become headquarters of the Chickasaw Nation. He was Vice-Chairman of the Council of Elders and inducted to the Chickasaw Hall of fame in 2011.

After Faye’s death, he married Annie and moved to northwest Alabama, the former homelands of the Chickasaw. He chaired the development of a Trail of Tears steamboat landing project. He and Annie helped communities celebrate the 2019 Alabama Bicentennial. As a second Chickasaw Cultural Center is being built in Mississippi, his focus is to educate about the tribes that left on their Trail of Tears.

Robert has published other Native books but directs you to Uprising! Woody Crumbo’s Indian Art with the Chickasaw Press. Uprising is about the rapid rise of Indian Art to fine art. Uprising won the Eric Hoffer Award and finalist of Foreword Magazine Book of the Year.
