Diary Of A Shy Girl

Diary Of A Shy Girl

A Childhood Memoir

by Akpene R. Zikpi

About The Book

As an adolescent girl, Akpene R. Zikpi always wanted to be like the other kids. She wanted to live life as they did. She admired the relationship they had with their parents and longed for the same closeness they shared. She was looking for someone who was like her, who dealt with parent absenteeism, and struggled with adapting to change.

“There was a time I would never have thought of publishing a memoir,” says Akpene. As she grew into adulthood and reread her childhood diary, she became more open to the idea.

Diary of a Shy Girl is a commentary on childhood. It is a personal account of faith, youth, growing up, and a search for God. In writing it, she has shared a synopsis in time: a story that is candid and amusing—yet, at times, solemn.

About The Author

Akpene R. Zikpi grew up in a Pentecostal home. She grew up as the youngest girl and child in her family. She misses her dad a lot, but she doesn't know how to express this to him. For Akpene, summer months mean being able to finally see her father, loading up in the family Volkswagen, and heading to a summer full of church functions and festivities in Ghana. Other summers, she spends weekend afternoons visiting with family friends. She recounts what life was like living in a four-bedroom flat and sharing a bedroom with her sibling. She wished she could be like the other kids who were allowed to go out and date. When two new students who spoke her language came, she was relieved to have someone with whom she could converse.

After graduating from high school, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she obtained her bachelor of arts. She continues to write in her spare time.
