A ferry crossing of the Channel from Newhaven, southeast England, to Dieppe in northern France is regularly undertaken by middle-aged Anglo-American protagonist Jena Cohn. The events which follow her indebtedness to a strong mysterious Frenchwoman, who pulls her up from the sea during her voyage into France, lead Jena to explore the depths of her new friend's past and family history. Jena Cohn, a lonely alcoholic expatriot, engages in a crossing over time into the days of resistance and retribution of the Spanish Civil War, of the French Resistance, of the Occupation of France and back towards the present. Her repayment of indebtedness to the Frenchwoman who had saved her life becomes Jena's own salvation.
